Parenting a gender-expansive child is a journey of profound love that can also bring a lot of questions and uncertainty. We understand that you want to support your child with your whole heart, but it’s also okay to acknowledge that you might need guidance along the way.
I specialize in providing compassionate therapy for parents of kids who identify as non-binary or transgender to help support you down this path with confidence and care.
Understanding and Supporting Your Child and Yourself
Gender-expansive basically describes children whose interests, expression, or sense of self differ from the general, narrow expectations about boys and girls. It’s a broad, inclusive term which recognizes how a child dresses, plays, speaks, or identifies can change over time, and that’s okay. You don’t need to rush to labels, what matters most is listening, staying curious, and celebrating who they are today.
If you’re feeling a mix of emotions like confusion, fear for your child’s future, or even grief, please know that your feelings are completely normal and valid. This is where dedicated parenting support becomes important. Therapy for parents provides a safe space to process these hard to understand emotions, allowing you to move from a place of worry to one of care and compassion for your child.
My Approach as a Therapist
I work with parents who want to support their child with confidence, not fear. My job is to help parents understand their child better.
My approach is always gender-affirming, trauma informed, and specific to your family’s story and strengths. In our sessions, we will try to bring together practical methods to address the challenges you’re facing. This includes using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help identify and manage the cycle of anxious thoughts, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to build emotional resilience in the face of stress.
We will also use narrative therapy as a powerful tool to help separate your child’s authentic identity from the fears and external pressures that can cloud a parent’s journey. The ultimate goal is to give you a toolkit for calm communication, self care, and acceptance, reminding you of your innate ability to be the supportive anchor your child needs and deserves. I provide dedicated gender identity therapy via accessible telehealth across the U.S., with the option for in person sessions in Tacoma, WA.
LGBTQ Family Therapy That Strengthens Connection
Families thrive on connection, and open communication as its foundation. My work in LGBTQ family therapy primarily focuses on creating a safe space where everyone feels heard. Whether you are a two parent home, a single parent, or a blended family, this therapy is inclusive of all family structures and their journeys.
We work together to understand all things such as pronouns, names, and how to advocate for your child in schools and the community. This dedicated parenting support brings your family closer and creates a stronger bond that gives place to no uncertainty with shared and mutual compassion, and respect as well as understanding.
